Light
Rail
Anzir was previously light rail editor
of
the now defunct RailInfo website, and a former member of the Light Rail Transit Association (who
are the most complete resource on light rail in the UK). His interest
in light rail stems from three main areas
- rapid urban transit and its relationship to travel patterns
- integrated transport, and light rail's role within an integrated
system
- the relationship between core public transport networks (such as
light rail) and urban form
He was on the organising committee of the Hallam Seminar 2004,
sponsored by the ILT and Transport
Planning Society, entitled "Light Rail
in Northern Cities: Can we
afford more?", and held at Sheffield Hallam University. He also
discussed plans for the Mauritius light rail system with the Minister
of Transport in 2000, and was involved in outline work on Merseytram.
A related area of research is in so called
intermediate systems, part way between buses and light rail.
Examples include the guided
busway / O-bahn system in use in Leeds,
Bradford, Crawley and other places, and lightweight tram systems
proposed by JPM Parry,
Minitram and Professor Lewis
Lesley of Liverpool
John Moores University.

approach to extensions explained

and Rapid Transit site can be found here
(please note that not all
links work. Please email
if you are interested in reviving this site)
- Tram afficionados will also appreciate the frankly obscure chocolate tram.
