Hampshire Rapid Transit, unlike many of the light rail lines opened
around the country, provides a new fixed link across a body of water,
in the shape of a tunnel between Gosport and Portsmouth. Gosport is one
of the largest towns in the country without a railway station, in
addition to being cut off from nearby Portsmouth apart from a ferry
across the harbour. South Hampshire Rapid Transit, which was promoted
by a consortium of Hampshire authorities, and now by a new PTE like
body called Solent Transport, intends to build a network of lines
around Southampton and Portsmouth, starting with this important link
over a disused railway line from Fareham to Gosport, a brand new tunnel
sunk under Portsmouth Harbour, and on street running through Portsmouth
city centre. Central government has still not, in 2004, given full approval for the scheme. |
