NeoOffice is the free alternative to Microsoft®
Office that works
NeoOffice has been developed for Mac users (OS X only) from OpenOffice and is
fully compatible with OpenOffice 1.1.5 and can open Open Document files
from OpenOffice 2.0
bramley apple is a strong supporter of NeoOffice as it provides most of
what Microsoft Office offers (including features such as "Track
Changes" (Word) and "Pivot Tables" (Excel) which cannot be found in
other alternatives, and is more Mac compatible (for example, allowing
access to all your normal Mac OS X fonts)
About OpenOffice on the Mac

Get
NeoOffice 1.2 (124Mb). This links to a download page
with a choice of download sites.
NeoOffice 1.2 requires Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), 256Mb of memory
and 400Mb of hard disk space
We would recommend a 1GHz G4 processor and at least 512Mb of memory for
running it smoothly

- NeoOffice runs on Java.
Run Software Update to check if a newer version of Java is available
for your computer (the latest version requires Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
NeoOffice setup
To use NeoOffice as a "drop in" replacement for Microsoft Office, a few
changes need to be made after installation.

From the Application (NeoOffice)
menu, select Preferences...
Click on the +
next to Load &
Save in the left hand panel
Select General
Under Standard File
Format, select the items in Document
Type one by
one
Make Always Save As
match the following in each case, by selecting it from the drop down
list

wrong dictionary can be a pain!
