Setting up your domain name with 1&1

bramley apple offers domain names through our partners at 1&1 at the cheapest prices in the UK.

I have bought a domain name, what now?

1. Confirm your account details with 1&1

• You will need to wait for an email to confirm activation of your account

• After the confirmation, go to http://www.1and1.co.uk, enter the account number and your password to gain access to the 1&1 Member Centre

• You will see the package features panel (below), which gives you access to changing your domain and email settings

2. Redirect your website

• The domain name redirects visitors to your website. It is important to know that, unless you have bought a hosting package, you will still need to provide your own space to upload your website to. Most Internet Service Providers have this facility, and it is worth going to your internet provider's help pages to see what the arrangements are.

• If your Internet Service Provider does not supply web space, or you do not have a service provider (for example, your house/hall etc. is broadband or University network equipped or you wold like facilities separate from the person who pays for the service), you will need to get some space. Free space is available from companies such as Tripod and Yahoo!Geocities, but you will need to put up with advertising on your site.

• Choose "Domains" to be able to forward your domain onto your existing webspace. You will need the address of your webspace. Click "Edit" and enter the forwarding address.

• If you have bought an Instant Domain package (just £1.99 a year + VAT), you will get an invisible frame which means the address of individual pages will not be shown in the address bar. You will also need to specify a page title and some keywords for search engines.

3. Redirect your email

• Choose "email" to set up email addresses for your new domain.

• Choose "new" to set up a new email address. Unless you have bought a mail hosting package (such as Instant Mail), you will need a valid email address to redirect messages.

• If you have a mailbox (for example 1&1 Instant Mail), you can choose "Mailbox" and fill in the details of your 1&1 mailbox, otherwise choose "Forward" and enter the email address you want to forward to.
• There is no need to add extra addresses, unless you want emails to be delivered to two different places (for example your home and work email addresses).

4. Register your domain with Nominet (.uk domains)

• A letter will arrive in the post to confirm your Nominet registration (domains ending in .uk domains - another agency will write if it is not a .uk domain). You will need to log into the Nominet website with the PIN to complete your registration and obtain your certificate of ownership

• download and print your certificate.
